How to design a call centre network

The network is a call centre’s working tool. This guide sums up the decisions that separate a stable floor from one with drop-outs and poor voice quality.

Domotica Valencia · Updated:

In short

A call centre network needs certified cabling at every seat with spare points, voice and data on separate networks with quality of service, managed PoE switches on UPS, dual internet connections, high-density WiFi for other devices and monitoring to spot problems before agents do.

Design keys

Design decisions in a call centre network
AspectRecommendation
SeatsAt least one outlet per seat, plus spare for layout changes.
VoiceSeparate voice network and end-to-end quality of service.
SwitchesManaged, with PoE for IP phones, connected to a UPS.
InternetDual connections from different carriers with automatic failover.
WiFiHigh density for laptops, phones and training rooms.
MonitoringAlerts on outages, saturation and link errors.

Common mistakes

  • Cabling only today’s seats and running out of points for the next campaign.
  • Mixing voice and data without prioritisation: voice breaks up when someone downloads a file.
  • A single internet line for the whole floor.
  • Racks without UPS or proper ventilation.

Frequently asked questions

Can agents work over WiFi?

It is possible, but for fixed seats with continuous voice, cable remains more stable. WiFi is kept for mobility, training and auxiliary devices.

What if the internet goes down?

With dual connections, traffic switches to the backup line automatically and calls in progress are affected as little as possible.
