Energy savings calculator

Home automation energy savings calculator

How much you can save a year by automating climate, hot water and lighting, calculated with the same factors Spain’s Ministry uses for energy savings certificates.

In short

The UNE-EN ISO 52120-1 standard classifies building automation into four classes, from D (no efficient control) to A (high efficiency), and gives each a consumption factor per service. Moving to a better class reduces consumption by the ratio between factors. This calculator applies the factors Spain’s MITECO includes in its energy savings certificate sheets.

Home automation energy savings calculator

Estimate how much you can save by automating heating, cooling, hot water and lighting, using the official UNE-EN ISO 52120-1 factors that Spain’s Ministry uses for energy savings certificates.

Where the figures come from

Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) publishes standardised sheets to calculate savings from automation and control systems: RES040 for homes and TER050 for tertiary buildings. Their tables include the UNE-EN ISO 52120-1:2022 efficiency factors, with class C as the reference (factor 1).

Each service’s saving is current spend × 1 − (new class factor ÷ current class factor). For example, in a home, moving from class C to B for heating gives 1 − 0.88 ÷ 1 = 12 %.

Energy savings certificates (CAE)

Projects that bring a service to at least class B can certify their savings through Spain’s energy savings certificate scheme, with an energy performance certificate, invoices and the installer’s BAC class declaration. If it interests you, we assess it in the study.

Frequently asked questions

What does each class mean?

D: no efficient control. C: standard control, the reference. B: advanced control by zone, schedule and presence, with monitoring. A: high efficiency, demand and occupancy control with coordination between systems and continuous optimisation.

Why are there no lighting savings for homes?

The Ministry’s residential sheet only covers heating, cooling and hot water. Automating lighting also saves at home, but the standard gives no official factor for homes.

Are the savings guaranteed?

No. It is a standardised estimate; actual savings depend on the building, equipment and use. Measuring consumption before and after is recommended.
