Viewing your cameras on your phone securely

Remote viewing is essential, but a poor setup can leave the recorder exposed on the internet. These are the options and their risks.

In short

There are three ways to view cameras on your phone: the vendor app with a P2P connection through its cloud, such as Hik-Connect; a VPN into the home or business network; or opening router ports. The first two are recommended; opening ports exposes the recorder and should be avoided.

Options

Remote access to cameras and recorders
OptionAdvantagesRisks
Vendor app (P2P)Simple, no router changes; works with CGNAT, 4G or Starlink.Relies on the vendor cloud service.
VPNRecorder not exposed; access to the whole network.Needs a well-configured VPN router or server.
Open portsNo third-party dependency.Exposes the recorder to automated attacks. Not recommended.

Good practice

  • Long, different passwords for recorder, cameras and app.
  • Two-step verification on the app account.
  • Up-to-date recorder and camera firmware.
  • Limited-permission users for family or staff.
  • A separate network for the cameras.
  • UPnP disabled on the router so nothing opens ports by itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is the vendor P2P secure?

Reasonably, if the account has a strong password, two-step verification and firmware is current. For maximum privacy, a VPN avoids relying on outside services.

Does it work over 4G or Starlink?

Yes, with the P2P app or a suitably prepared VPN. Opening ports does not work because those connections usually lack a public IP.
