How to monitor a site without power or internet

Fields, building sites, stores and huts often have neither a socket nor fibre. They can still be monitored; this guide explains how and the limits.

In short

To monitor a site without electricity or internet, use 4G cameras powered by a solar panel and battery, or wireless alarms with photo detectors that send alerts over the mobile network. First check mobile coverage, panel orientation and what you need to see or detect.

What to check first

  • Real 4G coverage at the exact installation point, not just in the area.
  • Sun hours and shading on the panel throughout the year.
  • Mounting height and fixing point to deter theft or sabotage of the camera itself.
  • A data plan matching use: frequent live viewing uses more.
  • Where footage is stored: card in the camera, cloud or both.

Building sites: changing needs

On a building site the perimeter and entrances change with each phase. Standalone solutions can be moved without depending on the temporary power supply.

Frequently asked questions

Does a solar camera work in winter?

Yes, if the panel and battery are sized for the shortest, cloudiest days. That is the first thing to calculate.

What if there is no 4G coverage?

External antennas or radio links to a connected point can be considered. Otherwise the camera can record locally without real-time alerts.
