Zoned climate control divides a ducted air system into zones with motorised dampers and a thermostat in each, so every room is conditioned only when needed. Integrated with home automation, it can switch off when a window opens, follow schedules or adapt to occupancy.
How zoning works
- A single ducted air-conditioning unit serves the whole home.
- Motorised dampers open or close airflow to each zone.
- One thermostat per zone shows the set and actual temperature.
- A control system (for example Airzone) coordinates dampers and unit.
What automation adds
- Switch a zone off when a window or terrace door opens.
- Per-room schedules: bedrooms at night, living room in the evening.
- Away mode with a single command when leaving.
- Coordination with blinds to reduce solar gain.
- Control from the same app as lights and blinds.
Integration with KNX and Loxone
Professional zoning systems usually offer gateways to KNX, Loxone and other systems. Check compatibility before choosing equipment and include the gateway in the project.
Without ducts (split units, underfloor heating) the logic is similar: each room with its own sensor and control, coordinated by the automation system.
Common mistakes
- Zoning without reviewing duct and grille design.
- Placing thermostats in sunlight, near heat sources or in draughts.
- Duplicating controls: a zoning thermostat and a separate automation one that are not coordinated.
