Smart home pre-wiring means installing, before walls and ceilings are closed, the cabling, back boxes, conduits and technical space that automation, networking, cameras and access control will need. Doing it at that stage is cheaper and more reliable than retrofitting.
Pre-wiring checklist
- A ventilated technical cupboard for the automation panel, network rack and recorder.
- Automation bus cabling (or spare conduit) to switches and sensors.
- Separate lighting circuits so they can be dimmed independently.
- Cabling or conduit for blind and awning motors.
- Wired network outlets in living room, office and TV points, plus ceiling WiFi points.
- Conduit and power for cameras at entrances and perimeter.
- Provision for video intercom, motorised lock and access control.
- Empty spare conduits between floors and to the outside for future expansion.
Coordinate with architect and electrician
Pre-wiring works when the technology integrator joins at the design stage, alongside the architect and electrician, so switch positions, technical space and routes are resolved on the drawings.
