A smart lock opens a door by code, card, phone or fingerprint, creates temporary access and logs entries. There are motors fitted over the existing lock, complete motorised locks and electric strikes for building entrances; the choice depends on the door, the use and the integration you need.
Main types
| Type | Where it fits | Bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Motor over the existing lock | Homes that do not want to change the lock. | Depends on cylinder and door; battery-powered. |
| Complete motorised lock | Home and office doors, new builds or renovations. | Usually needs power and cabling in the door. |
| Electric strike or door release | Building entrances, gates and shared access. | Combined with an intercom or reader. |
Entry methods
- PIN code: handy for temporary access; change it often.
- Card or fob: quick and easy to revoke if lost.
- Phone: send and withdraw permissions remotely.
- Fingerprint: convenient, but keep an alternative method.
- Mechanical emergency key: essential as a backup.
What to check first
- Compatibility with the door (security, armoured, aluminium) and cylinder.
- What happens if batteries run out or power fails.
- Entry log and user management.
- Integration with intercom, alarm or automation, e.g. disarming the alarm on entry.
- Account and app security: strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
