An IP video intercom is an outdoor station with a camera that connects to the data network instead of a proprietary bus. You can answer the door from monitors, IP phones or your mobile, open remotely, log visits and integrate it with home automation, the PBX and access control.
How it differs from a traditional intercom
| Aspect | Bus intercom (2-wire) | IP video intercom |
|---|---|---|
| Cabling | Manufacturer’s own bus. | Data network, often PoE-powered. |
| Where it is answered | Monitors from the same manufacturer. | Monitors, IP phones, PBX and mobile. |
| Integration | Limited or via gateways. | Standard protocols such as SIP. |
| Expansion | Tied to the manufacturer’s range. | More flexible. |
What it brings to a home or business
- Answer the door from your phone while away.
- Let in couriers or carers when you are not home.
- See the image on the automation panel or TV.
- Log calls and entries with images.
- In businesses, route the call to reception or the PBX.
In apartment buildings
If the building has a bus intercom, the outdoor station can be replaced with an IP one or the flat integrated through a compatible gateway. The decision affects all residents and usually needs the community’s agreement.
