In an existing home, automation is mostly installed with wireless devices fitted behind switches, in blind boxes or next to the climate equipment, using the existing electrical wiring. It lets you control lighting, blinds, climate and security without chasing walls, with less scope than a wired system.
What can be automated without building work
- Lighting: actuators fitted behind the existing switch, or wireless switches replacing it.
- Blinds and awnings: motors in the blind box, controlled by switch, schedule or phone.
- Climate: control of existing units through gateways or connected thermostats.
- Security: wireless detectors, sirens and cameras with phone alerts.
- Access: motorised locks and connected video intercoms.
- Technical detectors: water leaks, smoke or open windows.
What to check before you start
- WiFi coverage throughout the house: many systems rely on a stable network.
- Whether switch boxes have a neutral wire and enough depth: some actuators need it.
- The condition of the consumer unit and wiring, especially in older homes.
- Whether blinds are already motorised and whether there is power near the blind box.
- Which climate units you have and whether they accept external control.
Common wireless technologies
| Technology | Advantages | Bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Professional RF systems (e.g. Loxone Air, KNX RF) | Integration in one system, professional programming. | Need a central server or gateway. |
| Consumer standards (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter) | Wide choice of devices and brands. | Cross-brand integration varies; a common controller helps. |
| Standalone WiFi devices | Simple to install. | One app each and often reliant on the vendor cloud. |
Limits of no-rewire automation
Wireless devices work well, but some run on batteries that need replacing and their reliability depends on radio coverage. If you renovate later, that is a good moment to move the renovated areas to a wired system.
Start with what you use most — shared-area lighting, blinds, climate — and choose a system from day one that can grow without replacing what is installed.
