To install a home charger, the contracted power is reviewed, a dedicated circuit is run from the consumer unit to the garage with the cable and protection required by ITC-BT-52 of Spain’s Low Voltage Regulation, a Mode 3 charger with a Type 2 connector is fitted and the installation certificate is issued. With dynamic load management, the contract usually does not need increasing.
Steps
| Step | What is done |
|---|---|
| 1. Study | Contracted power, home consumption, car and daily mileage. |
| 2. Charger choice | Power, single or three-phase, dynamic management, connectivity and solar charging. |
| 3. Circuit | Dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, sized for power and distance. |
| 4. Protection | Circuit breaker, residual current device suitable for charging and surge protection. |
| 5. Commissioning | Charger, app, schedule and load management setup. |
| 6. Paperwork | Electrical installation certificate and, where relevant, grant documents. |
Dynamic load management
A meter at the supply tells the charger how much the home is using. If the oven or air conditioning comes on, the charger lowers its power; when they finish, it raises it again. This makes the most of contracted power without tripping the limiter.
Charging at the cheapest hours
- With Spain’s 2.0TD domestic access tariff, the off-peak period runs from midnight to 8 am on weekdays and all day at weekends and national holidays.
- Schedule charging in that period from the charger app or home automation.
- With solar panels, the charger can use only surplus or combine it with the grid.
