Cameras and recorders with artificial intelligence classify what they see: they tell people and vehicles apart from other movement, detect line crossings and zone intrusions, read number plates and let you search recordings by object type. Effectiveness depends on camera placement, lighting and careful configuration.
Common functions
| Function | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Person and vehicle classification | Fewer alerts from trees, rain, shadows or animals. |
| Line crossing | Alert when someone crosses a fence or boundary in one direction. |
| Zone intrusion | Alert when someone enters or stays in an area. |
| Smart search | Find every appearance of people or vehicles in minutes. |
| Number-plate reading | Open barriers for authorised vehicles and log entries. |
| Face recognition | Very restricted under data protection; needs a clear legal basis. |
How to avoid false alarms
- Mount the camera at a height and angle that shows people full-length.
- Draw zones and lines only where an alert makes sense, not across the whole image.
- Ensure enough light at night or choose low-light cameras.
- Set schedules: an entry at noon is not the same as at 3 a.m.
- Review alerts in the first weeks and tune sensitivity.
Analytics and data protection
Detecting people or vehicles identifies nobody, but face recognition processes biometric data and is only permissible in very limited cases. Before enabling it, assess whether it is necessary and document it.
